About Mars da Favela

Founded 2012

The year was 2010 and the summer hot, when jewelry designer Mars Castro met designer Maka Basilio in the heart of the largest ill-reputed favela of Rio de Janeiro. The crossing of these two paths from opposite sides of the globe was the start of something destined, their utopian label MARS DA FAVELA.

Favela, takes it's name from slum and with it is the story of the stupendous gap between rich and poor. The outcome is shootouts between rival factions, corrupt militia and police over territory, drugs, money and power. But when the smoke clears and the gunpowder is long gone neglected brass bullet casings are given a new lease on life by conjoining them with the most divine natural Brazilian crystals. The result is an arresting first jewelry collection appropriately named “Crystals not Pistols” and Mars da Favela have realized and merged their vision for equality and non-violence into something with the simplest symbology - The crystal is mightier than the pistol!

Erykah Badu, Lady Gaga, Grimes and Nai Palm (Hiatus Kaiyote) are amongst the lovers and wearers of these distinct jewels. Other signature pieces by Mars da Favela include the Octo-medallion, Magnum-crystal knuckle-dusters and the divine Aura Quartz collection. Crafted with Brazilian and Madagascan crystals, polished brass and high-quality silver, MDF creates unisex and original pieces that withstand time and trends. Spending their time between Brazil, where they travel to hand select only the finest crystals direct from the basalt plains and amethyst caves,to Melbourne Australia where MDF take time to design and piece together their collections and custom pieces. MDF sells worldwide, exclusively through their online store, and very select stockists.
